Plymouth Area LWV Committees

Our Committees focus on priority issues in our community. We encourage League members to explore different Committees until they find one they enjoy! Attending a meeting does not commit you to being a member of that Committee.

New ideas and initiatives are welcome. Leadership opportunities are available for Members.

Committee Role
Affordable Housing The Affordable Housing Committee works to 1) promote programs, rules, and policies that make housing fair and affordable for all families and individuals, and 2) encourage building and maintaining affordable housing for people of low to moderate incomes. Volunteers support these goals by researching best practices, attending best practice forums, submitting public testimony to the town, and coordinating with local partners on implementing strategies. Chair: Art Desloges
Civic Engagement The Civic Engagement Committee promotes civic education and engagement in the schools and with voting-age residents. This Committee works with the Plymouth Public School system and the Town Clerk’s Office to encourage voting and participation in the democratic process. Committee activities include 1) supporting programming in the schools, 2) providing local election resources and information, and 3) understanding obstacles to voter turnout and working to remove them where possible. Chair: Lyle Lawrence
Communications The Communications Committee is responsible for 1) maintaining the Plymouth LWV website, 2) publishing an e-newsletter “The Bulletin”, 3) managing our social media accounts, 4) sending out email communications to our membership, and 5) providing general event and communication support. Volunteers work together to support these tasks. Chair: Emily Tompkins.
Diversity, Equality, Inclusion and Accessibility The DEIA Committee serves the Plymouth area by promoting equal access to civic participation, particularly voting, and ensuring all residents are represented in our democracy. Guided by the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, the committee works to remove systemic barriers and promote fairness across all aspects of community life, including education, housing, healthcare, economic opportunity, public safety, and cultural representation. Through outreach, community engagement, and public dialogue, we strive to raise awareness, build connections, and inspire meaningful change. Our mission is to create a more informed, inclusive, and empowered community where every voice is heard and everyone belongs. Chair: Phoebe Flynn.
LWVMA Legislative Action The LWV MA Legislative Action Committee supports advocacy of the MA State League of Women Voters and works across the state. This Committee works to 1) influence State public policy, lawmakers, and public opinion on priority issues, and 2) organize advocacy campaigns across League chapters across the State. Volunteers focus on a specific topic by monitoring legislation in their area, submit testimony, and recommend which legislation should be a priority for the state League to sponsor. Chair: Art Desloges.
LWVMA Legislative Envoy Program The Legislative Envoy Program works to inform the MA State League on our local chapters’ priorities and have the information and resources they need to advocate for our priorities. The Envoy meets 1-2 times a year with the State Representative(s) and Senator(s) who represent their local League in their districts – developing relationships with them and their staff to communicate LWVMA’s legislative priorities. The Envoy follows State bills, participates in webinars, acts on Action Alerts, and attends the League “Day on the Hill.” To learn more, click here. Chair: Art Desloges.

Observer Corps The Observer Corps follows the meetings and work of Plymouth local government Boards and Committees. This Committee works to increase transparency, ensure State and Town guidelines are being followed, and creates and shares reports to support dissemination of information with League members and residents. Volunteers work together to select which Boards and Committees to follow, attend those meetings, and write reports. Chair: Martha Vautrain
Sustainability The Sustainability Committee supports environmental efforts on the local, state, and national level. This Committee partners with local organizations on environmental-focused programming, education, and events; as well as supporting the State and National League of Women Voters sustainability initiatives.
